To protect the chalk cliffs in the Jasmund National Park, it became a protected nature reserve in the 1920s, it was only included in the national park program in 1990.
Although Jasmund National Park is mostly known for the chalk cliffs and especially the Konigsstuhl. Still, Jasmund National Park is the best visited National Park of Germany with 320,000 visitors.
The history of this area dates back to 1880 when a wooden barn was built in order to stay overnight due to the admiration of the chalk pots. This building was rebuilt after a fire as a hotel with stone and is still found on Rugen.
The large parking lot is about 3 kilometers from the Konigsstuhl, the Konigsstuhl is accessible via a handicapped friendly path.
