Chalk Cliffs of Rügen
If you enjoy a good hike and are reasonably fit, walking from Sassnitz to the Königsstuhl makes for a wonderful way to spend a day on Rügen. Along the route you'll be treated to breathtaking views of the Kreidefelsen — the iconic chalk cliffs lining the island's coast. The walk takes around three hours. There is a rest stop roughly halfway, though it has been closed for quite some time, so on a warm day it's wise to bring some snacks and water. If you'd rather not walk back, or simply don't feel up to it, you can easily take the bus back to Sassnitz.
Explore the Chalk Cliffs by Boat
Not keen on hiking? There's a great alternative for visiting the Königsstuhl: go by boat. From Sassnitz you can hop on a ferry and enjoy the cliffs from the water. Several boats also depart from Binz and cruise along the chalk coastline. Visitors who have taken the boat trip recommend choosing a smaller vessel, as it gives you a much better view. The larger ferries that sail along the coast tend to get very crowded during peak season, making it difficult to find a good spot to admire the cliffs or take photos.
Chalk Cliff Coastline and Erosion
The chalk cliff coastline stretches for around 15 kilometres and is one of the most stunning areas on Rügen. Most visitors to the island make a point of seeing the cliffs, whether by foot or from the water. Unfortunately, these beautiful formations are no match for the elements. Over the years, large sections have crumbled and tumbled down, and after heavy rainfall it's common to find fresh chunks of rock scattered at the base of the cliffs.
