Read more →Rügen is above all a wonderful beach island. With more than 60 kilometres of sandy beach along the Baltic Sea, there is a perfect spot here for every taste: from broad, sophisticated bathing beaches with beach chairs to quiet natural beaches where you can walk alone for hours. Below you will find all of Rügen's beaches on the map.
Broad sandy beaches and seaside resorts
The most famous beaches are at the seaside resorts of Binz, Sellin, Göhren and Baabe: fine white sand, a gentle slope into the sea and all amenities within easy reach. Along the Schaabe, the narrow strip of land between Glowe and Juliusruh, stretches one of the longest and broadest beaches on the island, fringed by pine forest. At Prora too you will find a kilometres-long, peaceful beach on the Prorer Wiek.
Safe with children
Many beaches on the east coast have hardly any current and shelve gently, making them ideal for families with small children. Always keep an eye on your children and watch the flags. The Baltic Sea is low in salt and warms up pleasantly in summer, so swimming is a delight. Many coastal campsites also have a swimming pool with a paddling pool.
Watersports and naturism
Surfing, kitesurfing, diving and snorkelling are possible at various spots along the coast, and from several harbours you can take a boat trip, for instance to the neighbouring island of Hiddensee. Rügen also has a long naturist tradition: scattered across the island are official nudist beaches, recognisable by the FKK signs. An ordinary bathing beach is marked with "Textil".
Enjoy the coast
Whether you come to sunbathe, to swim or simply to take a long beach walk along the Baltic Sea: on Rügen's beaches you can fully unwind. In the low and shoulder seasons too, the beaches are often surprisingly quiet. View them on the map below and find your favourite spot.
