Beaches on Rugen
Rügen is above all a fantastic destination for a classic beach holiday. The island's sights are well worth exploring during your visit, but many tourists also love to simply unwind and relax on the beach – and there is plenty of opportunity to do just that on Rügen.
Beaches along the coast
The coastline of Rügen is remarkably varied, shaped by the formation of numerous peninsulas. Several small islands also lie just off the coast of Rügen and can be reached by boat (including Hiddensee). Both the west and east coasts of the island offer a wide range of beaches where you can enjoy sun and sea during your holiday. The Baltic Sea warms up nicely in summer, making it perfect for a refreshing swim. As with our own North Sea coast, it is wise not to venture too far from shore, as currents can make it challenging to return to the beach – even for strong swimmers.
Enjoying the beach with children
If you are heading to Rügen with children, there are plenty of safe beaches suitable for families. Currents are minimal in many spots, allowing even young children to play safely in the water. Of course, it is still essential to keep a close eye on the kids, especially if they cannot yet swim or are not confident in the water. Many campsites along the Rügen coast also have swimming pools – often with a toddler pool – if you prefer a safer option to the open beach. Older children and adults can enjoy water sports along the shore, such as surfing, diving and snorkelling. Boat trips are also available at various locations around the island.
Enjoy your coastal holiday on Rügen
If you are a sun worshipper and beach lover, Rügen is an excellent holiday destination. The island boasts an abundance of beautiful beaches, and the weather generally cooperates to make for a wonderful stay. Even in the shoulder seasons, the beaches of Rügen are well worth a visit – if not for sunbathing, then certainly for a scenic walk along the Baltic Sea. Rügen has a long tradition as a favourite destination for nudists, and naturist beaches can be found all around the island. These nudist beaches are marked with signs reading "FKK". Beaches marked "Textiel" are regular bathing beaches for clothed swimmers.
