Rügen is home to dozens of villages and seaside resorts, each with its own character. Together, around 77,000 people live on the island, spread across fashionable coastal towns, quiet fishing villages and the green interior. Below you will find all the villages of Rügen on the map, with detailed information for each place.

The fashionable seaside resorts

The best-known villages are the classic seaside resorts along the east coast: Binz, Sellin, Göhren and Baabe. They share the graceful white seaside resort architecture, long beach promenades and elegant Seebrücken, and in summer they form the lively heart of the island.

Main town and Hanseatic cities

In the centre of the island lies Bergen, the largest town and the administrative heart of Rügen. To the south, the gleaming white residential town of Putbus comes as a surprise, and on the mainland the UNESCO Hanseatic city of Stralsund forms the gateway to the island. Harbour towns such as Sassnitz and Lauterbach connect Rügen by sea to neighbouring islands including Hiddensee.

Fishing villages and nature

Anyone seeking peace and quiet will find it in the smaller villages: the northern Putgarten near Kap Arkona, the picturesque Vitt, the harbour village of Lohme high above the coast, and the quiet places on the Mönchgut peninsula. Use the map below to discover the villages and plan your route across Rügen.
