Schloss Spyker
Schloss Spyker dates back to the "Swedish era" – it was built between 1570 and 1595. The castle was gifted by Swedish Queen Christina to Field Marshal Carl Gustav Graf von Wrangel in recognition of his services during the Thirty Years' War. After that war, this part of Germany came under Swedish rule. Originally a moated fortress, the castle was transformed into its current form during the years when Field Marshal von Wrangel took ownership. It was also painted red at that time – a distinctive feature that remains to this day. When the Count died in 1676, he bequeathed the castle to his daughter. Upon her death, it passed to her sister, who was married into the Swedish noble Brahe family. Eventually, in 1817, Schloss Spyker came into the possession of the German Prince Wilhelm Malte zur Putbus.
Schloss Spyker – A Beautiful Area for Walking
The castle features four characteristic round towers and is visible from a considerable distance across the surrounding landscape. The area around Schloss Spyker is ideal for walks and hikes. The castle is situated on the lake of the same name, the Spykersee, and borders the protected natural area of Jasmunder Boden. Since 2006, the castle has been in the hands of its current owner. Schloss Spyker has served as a hotel and restaurant for many decades.
The current owner has also added exhibition space and a theatre, where performances are held on a regular basis.
A Wonderful Place to Stay
In addition to being a notable landmark, Schloss Spyker is a hotel offering comfortable rooms. It is also a popular venue for weddings and other celebrations. The attached restaurant has an excellent reputation in Putbus and the surrounding region. For those who appreciate peace, nature, and historic surroundings, this is a truly ideal location. And since the island of Rügen is not particularly large, the castle makes an excellent base from which to explore the entire island during your holiday.
