U-Boat Museum Sassnitz

In Sassnitz on Rügen, you'll find the U-Boat Museum - a fascinating submarine museum housed inside the original British submarine Her Majesty's Submarine Otus, built in 1963. This class of submarine was constructed between 1959 and 1967 and was renowned for its whisper-quiet engine. That earned it the U-Boot museum sassnitznickname "Silent Hunter". To dive to depths of up to 300 metres, the vessel was built with pressure hulls made from extra-thick steel. The H.M.S. Otus served the Royal Navy of Great Britain for 28 years and was deployed in operations around the Falkland Islands, among others. A total of 27 submarines of this type were built - some for the British Royal Navy, while the remaining vessels were sold to countries including Canada, Australia and Chile.

Converted into a museum

After her active service, the Otus dropped anchor in Germany to be converted into a museum ship. A visit offers a realistic glimpse into life on board a submarine as it was experienced from the 1960s through to the 1980s. Through informative displays and exhibitions of original equipment, visitors gain a clear understanding of daily life on board and how the crew operated. You can also explore the engine room and the submarine's advanced control centre. Two still-functional periscopes allow you to take in a view of Sassnitz harbour. When three former crew members visited the Otus in 2004 to see how "their" submarine had been transformed into a museum, they noted that the hull still smelled exactly as it did during the time they served on board.
