Feuersteinfelder
The Feuersteinfelder are one of the most remarkable natural phenomena on Rügen: vast, white fields covered in flint stones in the middle of the heathland of the Schmale Heide, the narrow strip of land between Binz and Sassnitz.
A landscape of stone
The fields formed after the last ice age, when the sea washed flint from the chalk coast onto land. As the land gradually rose, the stones were left behind as wide, pale ridges across the heathland. The result is an open, almost moonlike landscape, framed by pine trees and heather.
