The Rasender Roland

The Rasender Roland – literally "Raging Roland" – is the well-known nickname for Rügen's narrow-gauge railway, the Rügensche Bäderbahn. The steam train runs via Binz to Göhren, operating exclusively with steam-powered narrow-gauge locomotives. During peak season, the service extends beyond Göhren to Lauterbach Mole. This railway has been in operation since 1899 and today serves a purely tourist function, connecting Rügen's most popular seaside resorts. The journey itself is an experience in its own right. The train rarely exceeds 30 kilometres per hour – hardly living up to its dramatic nickname – but the nostalgia is very much alive, and that is precisely what draws visitors from across Germany and beyond.

The History of the Rasender Roland

The railway line was built between 1895 and 1899. By the early 20th century it was already considered outdated, yet it survived regardless – including two World Wars. During World War II, Rügen was bombed and the railway was damaged as well. In the 1990s, the section between Putbus and Göhren was privatised and has since been operated by the Rügensche Kleinbahn.

Timetable

Since the train primarily serves tourists, it runs on an extensive schedule during summer, with departures every hour. During the shoulder seasons and winter months, the frequency drops to every two hours. The extension to Lauterbach Mole operates only in summer; outside this period, the line terminates at Göhren. During summer, the train runs well into the evening. Tickets can be purchased at the stations in Putbus, Binz, Göhren, and Lauterbach Mole. During peak season, ticket offices at smaller intermediate stops are also open. You can also buy your ticket on board from the conductor.
