Putbus Rugen
Putbus is the youngest town on the island of Rügen and at the same time the oldest seaside resort on the peninsula. Since 1997, Putbus has been officially recognised as a spa town. In English, Putbus is sometimes referred to as the White City, owing to its many whitewashed buildings. Another nickname is the Rose City, as numerous historic buildings are adorned with large, climbing rose bushes. Putbus is an exceptionally green town – almost 90 percent of its surface area consists of green space. The town has a population of just over four thousand residents.
The Putbus Castle Park
The main attraction is the freely accessible castle park. The former castle of Putbus was demolished in the 1960s, but its outbuildings – including the stables, the Orangerie and the terrace – have been preserved. The Orangerie and the stables host exhibitions and performances that can be visited for a fee. The largest building in Putbus is the Pädagogium, which was used as a training centre for IT specialists until 2014.
The Rasender Roland Narrow-Gauge Railway
Putbus is the starting point of the famous Rasender Roland narrow-gauge railway. This railway line was built between 1895 and 1899 and also stops at Binz and Göhren. Today, the line is used exclusively by tourists, and historic steam trains still operate on the route. The line was later extended to Lauterbach and widened to standard gauge, allowing modern trains to run as well. A ride on the train is well worth it – you can enjoy the stunning natural scenery and there are plenty of opportunities along the way to take photographs of the surrounding landscape.
Events in Putbus
Each year in May, Putbus hosts the Putbus Festival, with concerts held at various locations throughout the town. In June, Rügen's annual harbour festival takes place, and in September you can enjoy the cabaret festival in Putbus. Exact dates for these events are announced on the websites of the local tourist information offices.
