Rügen is not a large island, so it comes as no surprise that there are no major cities here - only villages. Güttin is one of them, and it is best known for being home to Rügen's only airport. The airfield is located about eight kilometres south of the town of Bergen. It is a small facility, restricted to aircraft with a maximum take-off weight of 5 to 7 tonnes, which is why it is officially classified as a Regionalflugplatz. Flights operate exclusively from within Germany or from Denmark. If you are travelling from further abroad and want to fly to Rügen, you can connect via Hamburg, for example.
How to reach Güttin
Güttin and its airport are situated along the major arterial road, the B 96. If you prefer to travel by public transport, you can take the train line running between Sassnitz and Stralsund. Güttin does not have its own train station - the nearest stop is Teschenhagen, approximately 3 kilometres away. From the airfield near Güttin, you can take one of several scenic flights over the island. There are eight different routes available. Prices for a sightseeing flight over Rügen range from €54 for a roughly 20-minute trip to €229 for a full ninety-minute tour.
The history of the airfield near Güttin
Rügen's airport is a relatively modern facility. It only opened in 1982, initially with nothing more than a grass runway, meaning only small aircraft could operate there. Planes used at the time included the Let Z-37 and the Antonov AN-2. In 1993, the airfield received a paved runway and began offering charter flights to Berlin, Bornholm, and Hamburg. A further modernisation followed in 1998, when a proper terminal was built, complete with a control tower and a restaurant. An above-ground aviation fuel station was also added at this time.
